Milford Sound

Milford Sound is popular for a reason! Ideally, you would see it during a rainstorm AND when the sun is shining. The steep mountains turn to waterfalls when it rains and with a little sunshine, it is much easier to get out of the car for all the stops and hiking options during your drive in.

THE APPEAL:

  • Visit the sight often referred to as the “8th wonder of the world”.

  • The road to Milford Sound is packed with sights and hikes, including the lake marian WALKING track (required if it is a nice day since it is #11 on my list of Best Hiking Trails in New Zealand).

  • Go on an iconic boat cruise to see the entirety of the fiord.

LOCATION: Fiordland National Park, south island New zealand

GETTING THERE:

  • Drive time from queenstown: 4 hours (without stops)

TIPS:

  • Stop in the town of te anau on your way from queenstown to grab lunch, groceries, and gas.

  • Book lodging in advance. THE MILFORD SOUND LODGE IS THE ONLY ACCOMMODATION. they have lodge, dorm, and camper van options.

  • Grab a visitor map of the road into milford to make sure you make some key stops including: Eglinton Valley, Mirror Lakes, Lake Gunn, Hollyford Valley Lookout, the Lake Marian walking track, Gertrude saddle route, and more.

  • Plan for multi-day hikes in fiordland, including: the Routeburn, Kepler, and Milford tracks.
